I love exploring new cities, whether it’s seeing the cliche tourist attractions or finding the local’s favourite places. I’m usually an AirBnB kinda girl, as I really enjoy that homely feeling whilst being in a new city (and I’m a sucker for good interior design). When I stayed in Amsterdam for the first time, I stayed with Hotel Jansen, which is situated in The Schinkel, an up and coming neighborhood near the Olympic Stadium area.
Aimed towards accommodating students, young professionals and interns based or staying in Amsterdam, Hotel Jansen isn’t your normal kind of hotel but I believe I can wholeheartedly recommend it for students or young people staying in the beautiful city of Amsterdam for longer periods of time. Be it for a summer school, a summer internship or a week away, Hotel Jansen has you covered. Whilst the hotel is not in the middle of the city, which is not ideal for the everyday tourist, it allows you to escape from the hoards of tourists, noise and let’s be honest… who really minds having a scenic walk/bike ride every day? Within a short biking distance, you can reach cool cafe’s and eateries, like Lot Sixty One or Happyhappyjoyjoy. I would not be complaining if I had these two gems in near distance to me every day. The tram stop is also a short bike ride or walk away, so you have easy access to the centre of Amsterdam.
Although the room we stayed in was quite compact, it had everything I needed: a VERY cool bicycle desk, a comfy bed and plenty of storage. What made it even better was the Dutch flair brought to the room, with its wooden furniture and unique wall art. On every floor, there is a huge kitchen/hang out space for socialising with the rest of the ‘Hotel Jansen Family’. And a family style community is what it is.
Hotel Jansen also boasts a restaurant called Mama’s. They serve salads, burgers, snacks, an array of drinks and a homemade daily special at dinner time. The delicious smell that comes from Mama’s as you walk to your room are enough to make you want to extend your stay!
Whether you are staying for one week or six months, you are made to feel at home by staying with Hotel Jansen. I certainly already feel ‘homesick’ and would go back to Amsterdam in an instant.
